Updates on the mess going on in Canada
Canadian Blender Reader Cat provides me with insight regarding the situation going on in The Great White North, where there’s quite a bit of political turmoil going on, you know, like the possibility of the current Liberal government getting overthrown (and with it, the country-wide gay marriage proposal). Since I don’t have a lot of time this AM to go through all the details, I thought that I would share Cat’s latest update and a few links to get you up to speed.
According to what various web sites have told me, things get started in the House at 10:00 AM Eastern Standard Time. Problem is, just as it is in your government, things happen when they happen. Definitely there will be a vote on the Budget Bill C-43. When though, is another question. Now, here’s where it gets interesting.
After Belinda Stronach left the Tories, Stephen Harper announced that the Conservative Part would support Bill C-43, which is the original budget. But, Bill C-48 is an amendment to the original budget. It’s the result of the deal Prime Minister Paul Martin made with Jack Layton, Leader of the NDP, to gain the NDP’s support. Harper hates it. Much to the disgust of many, particularly supporters of the NDP, he’s called it “a deal with the devil”, and has vowed to vote against it, bringing down the government.
But, just to complicate matters, there are three independent MP’s whose votes are critical. One has already said she will vote with the government; another has said he’s been listening to constituents, and they don’t want another election. So, even though he hasn’t come out and said it, he will probably vote with the government. The third, however, is being a real son of a bitch, in my opinion, and is absolutely wallowing in his moment of power, hinting that he just might want to bring the government down. Don’t you just love this? And these are only the basics; there’s a host of little side issues I can’t even begin to get into. Not least of them, what will happen to Bill C-38 The Marriage Equality Act, should the government fall. Oh, and Queen Elizabeth is in the country to celebrate the centennials of Alberta and Saskatchewan.
I hope I haven’t made your head spin with all of this…This government is the best hope for making same sex marriage legal from coast to coast in Canada. Wait! I almost forgot. There’s something going on in your country too! A little something called the”Nuclear Option”, that about right? Oy!
Some of the latest news:
* Liberal-Tory showdown looms. You can’t tell which way it’s going to go, in this long, good article on the current state of things.
* A CBC commentary by Georgie Binks on Belinda Stronach’s very interesting political background.
* Sexism cited in reaction to Stronach move. Her switch to the Liberals has resulted in some amazing insults from the Conservatives, including: “a dipstick – an attractive one, but still a dipstick” and that she “whored herself out for power.”
* Canada’s version of C-SPAN, called CPAC, where you can watch the wrangling live.
