Mass. Dems blow off Kerry and support gay marriage
Kerry didn’t even have the micro-cojones to endorse a plank supporting gay marriage in his party’s state platform. Barney Frank doesn’t see what the big deal is.
More than 2,500 delegates OK’d the new platform, without debating the language in favor of same-sex marriage, at the Democratic State Convention in Lowell.
“It is a little controversial to have it in our platform, but we are all about equal rights,” Framingham delegate Stephanie Mercandetti said after the annual convention at the Paul E. Tsongas Arena.
Democrats from U.S. Sen. John Kerry to former state Sen. David Magnani had expressed concern about how the change would affect the campaign of a Massachusetts Democrat seeking higher office in the nation.
U.S. Rep. Barney Frank, who is openly gay, called such an assertion “nonsense” yesterday. “As time goes by, a lot of things that are controversial in contemplation are boring in reality,” he said.
