Durham makes the news: smash and grab at the Costco
Normally, our town doesn’t make the news, but this report turned up on CNN, ha ha ha; saw it when I came home and flipped on the news. The Costco that we shop/tank up over in Northern Durham got knocked over, in an audacious smash-and-grab after-hours. A pickup smashed through the metal door, and the thugs got out and raided what they could and pulled away. Video is here. (NBC17):
The robbery began shortly after 10 a.m., when a man backed a stolen Toyota pickup truck through the doors of the business and stopped next to the jewelry counter, police said. Then, a passenger jumped out of the truck, smashed a jewelry case with a hammer and stole an undisclosed amount of jewelry. The robbers drove out of the store and abandoned the truck a few blocks away, police said.
Officers combing the area for the robbers attempted to stop one man walking in the area. The man fled, however, running into a nearby apartment in the 1000 block of Leon Street. Authorities were eventually able to get the man to come out of the apartment after a few hours. The man was subsequently released and no charges were filed against him, police said.
The robber who smashed the store’s jewelry case is described as a man about 5 feet 7 inches tall wearing a gray sweat jacket, dark pants and a black ski mask, according to police.
