Homo-bigot caller threatens S.F.-area teachers
The Religious Reich has fomented intolerance and this is what we get. I’m still reeling from that TV news report clip earlier this month of an anti-gay protest at North Bay High School, near S.F., that featured unbelievably Phelps-like f*cktards, complete with homo-bashing signs, and even a truck with crude gay-baiting signs. Now we have threatening phone calls to gay teachers in Mill Valley, CA. (Marin Independant Journal):
Following a string of anti-gay vandalism incidents at Tamalpais High School, five teachers at the school – some of whom are gay – have received threatening voicemail messages from an anonymous caller, officials said.
The calls follow seven incidents which began in November last year, the most recent of which resulted in written epithets of “die fag” on the car of a 17-year-old student, and “fag class” on the classroom door of a lesbian teacher at Tam High. No arrests have been made and it is not clear if police have any leads.
“Whoever is doing this is clearly looking for attention in some way and we are pursuing every possible avenue we can to apprehend this person,” said Jill Sampson, a member of the Tamalpais Union High School District Board of Trustees.
Five teachers at Tam High, who school officials declined to identify, received identical voicemail messages on their classroom telephones between 5:45 and 6:15 p.m. on April 12, said Bob Ferguson, superintendent of the district. The 12-second messages were not discovered until April 18, however, when staff returned from a week-long school holiday. Ferguson said the messages were left by a computer-generated caller with a female’s voice, who told the teachers “we know who you are and we’re watching you.”
“It was a veiled threat – it was the type of phone call that you would get that would be a little bit concerning,” Ferguson said.
The remainder of the voicemail message, Ferguson said, was muffled and indecipherable. The caller signed off with the initials “M.L.K.,” which Ferguson said matched the signature on an anti-gay letter received by the principal’s office at Tam six weeks ago.
Capt. James Wickham of the Mill Valley Police Department, which is investigating the incident, did not immediately return a call requesting comment yesterday.
The most recent incidents mark a departure from those over the last five months in that they targeted a group of teachers. With the exception of the last incident on Feb. 23, in which school officials reported finding anti-gay language on the classroom door of Lisa Miller, a lesbian teacher, the anti-gay crimes since November have largely targeted a 17-year-old Tam High student.
