I am not kidding — the head of the Alabama GOP is named Twinkle.
Say hello to new Alabama GOP Chairman Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh.
Special Election May Be Called Over Gay Marriage (365gay.com):
Alabama Gov. Bob Riley may call a special election on a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. It is one of three possibilities Riley is weighing. He could decide to put it on the June primary or wait and place it on the November election.
The key is what will give Republicans the biggest advantage. But, the GOP and Democrats are divided.
Many Republicans want it on the day of the November 2006 general election to help with conservative turnout, while some Democrats want it on the June primary date, when Republicans will face each other. Some Republicans have said the June date could help former Chief Justice Roy Moore increase his turnout of conservative Christian voters in a primary race against Riley, if they run for governor. Neither has announced his plans.
A special election would cost about $3 million.
Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh, the new chairman of the Alabama Republican Party, said she sees no reason why the same-sex marriage ban shouldn’t be voted on in a special election. “If we held a special election for the lottery, surely we could have it to protect marriage,” Cavanaugh said. “Hopefully we will be allowed to vote on them as soon as possible.”
