A gay-lesbian group is not being allowed to have a student club at New York Medical College in Westchester County. The homosexual students actually had a club – called Student Support Club – but when they changed the name to Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender People in Medicine, the college asked them to disband.

Club president Joshua Sahara says the club’s mission is education on health issues – not to promote homosexuality. It has about 13 members.

The college released a statement says it doesn’t discriminate in any way on the basis of sexual orientation but it retains the right to conform to practices and procedures as a health sciences university on the Catholic tradition. The school says it will not sponsor a organization whose objectives are incompatible with its values.
