Democrats up by Two in Generic Ballot

Only 46 % approve of how Obama his handling his job while 51% disapprove

The latest ABC-Washington Post poll is a mixed bag for Democrats. On the positive side they hold a small two point lead in the generic ballot. If the election was held today 47 percent of registered voters would pick a Democrat and 45 percent would pick a Republican. That is a one point improvement since March.

The problem for Democrats is they still struggle to get their voters to care about a non-presidential elections. While 81 percent of Republicans say they are almost certain to vote this November only 74 percent of Democrats are. Similarly, 77 percent of whites say they are almost certain to vote in the upcoming election while only 67 percent of non-whites say the same.

As the generational divide regarding support of the two parties grows this is going to be a serious and persistent problem for the Democratic party. They need to figure out a way to change voting habits.

In addition Democrats have to deal with the fact that President Obama is not very popular. Only 46 percent approve of how Obama his handling his job while 51 percent disapprove.
