Plurality Want Marijuana Legalized in Maine
The exact wording of the poll question was “Do you think marijuana usage should be legal or illegal in Maine?” The question did not indicate any marijuana legalization proposal would likely include taxation and regulation. The addition of these elements tends to slightly increase support.
These are relatively good numbers which indicated a well-written marijuana legalization ballot initiative would stand a decent chance of being approved in Maine. For a comparison, PPP polled Colorado in December of 2011. At that time it found 49 percent of voters in Colorado believed marijuana use should be legal, while 40 percent thought it should be legal. Colorado went on to approve Amendment 64 by a margin of 55-45 the next year.
The poll found marijuana legalization had majority support among every age under 65 in Maine. Senior citizens are the only age group opposed. This means natural demographic turnover should cause support to continue to grow.
