Protest Song of the Day: ‘Do You Remember America?’ by Leemanuel Hightire

To recognize the power of protest music, acknowledge its role in creating a culture of dissent and how musicians translate social issues and systemic problems into song, The Dissenter has launched a daily feature that highlights a protest song every weekday.

This morning this ongoing project features an independent artist named Leemanuel Hightire, who sent his song “Do You Remember America?” to be featured.

Hightire is a singer, songwriter and a producer who composes socially-conscious music that blends R&B, pop and rock. He prefers to create what many would call “message music” on social justice, the environment or poverty instead of only recording love songs.

This song was inspired by a newspaper column he read by Truthout contributor William Rivers Pitt titled, “I Remember America.” The article resonated with Hightire and inspired him to put some thoughts down on what he felt about Pitt’s column.

What he wound up producing was a song that really could be said to be asking if citizens remember the myth of AmericaIn the song, he sings about prisons overflowing, whether the country has liberty if there is warrantless wiretapping and how democracy should work for more than the elite.

Some of what people consider or believe to be memories were never true, but if they were ever true, the country is far from those ideals today.

You can find Hightire on Twitter at @leemanuelsmusic and here is his song.
