Uganda’s Porn Peddling Pastor Ssempa Responds to Critics

Pastor Martin Ssempa, one of the biggest proponents of Uganda's “Kill the Gays” Bill and a favorite contact for American Evangelicals like Rick Warren, has apparently been googling his name and doesn't like what he's been reading.

sempa-1.jpgAfter numerous scatological porn screenings to drum up support and fear for killing gays  in Uganda, one of which ended in people walking out of the room in disgust and another which took place in a church, it seems the criticism is getting under Ssempa's skin.  He released a lengthy press release (sent our way by Warren Throckman via Rev. Ssempa's supporting church, Canyon Ridge Christian Church in Las Vegas, which supports the Ssempas as missionaries to Uganda) that tries its best to shift blame and stir up more fears and misinformation about gays.

The screed is entitled in part “the homosexualist campaign to keep Africans ignorant of Sodomy” and begins with comparing showing the fetish porn as showing films about female genital mutilation to educate the public.

Get ready to go down the rabbit hole…

Here's the full press release.

After trying to tie showing niche fetish porn to educating about female genital mutilation, Ssempa goes on to continue to claim that the “Kill the Gays” Bill only applies to “death for pedophiles and those who raped the handicapped”, a claim that has been debunked by everyone from International Human Rights groups to President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton to Ssempa's own government.  In fact, many think that there are huge legal loopholes in the draft bill that would allow Uganda to execute anyone 'related' to homosexuals:

The wording of the legislation allows Uganda to execute anyone found guilty of repeat offenses involving homosexuality “or related offenses” which include speaking out in defense of tolerance, or being a relative, pastor or doctor of a homosexual and refusing to report that person to the authorities for execution.

Another meme from Ssempa in the press release is that he is simply fighting the “evils of Sodomy” in Uganda, not the gays themselves:

Dr. Martin Ssempa who is the executive director of the family policy and human rights center gave a researched presentation on “What” are the homosexual acts, and what are their consequence on the human body. It was very important that the proposed legislation would not be designed in ignorance and fear, but solid information on the acts which the bill seeks to legislate.

Interesting that Ssempa doesn't seem to consider that heterosexuals engage in sodomy too, something he never addresses.  He's happy to find the most fetishistic, fringe examples of gay sex acts that play into his “depraved, unclean homosexuals” fear-mongering, yet ignores that these acts certainly aren't limited to gay men and aren't what the bill's language and focus are about.

And his “solid information” comes from less than reputable sources.  His main source is from his ex-gay ally, Paul Kagaba of ex gay Uganda.  Kagaba uses “research presentations” showing “the secret but deviant acts of sodomy which included fisting, anal and fecal licking.”  He also has apparently “confirmed”:

the research and shared about the ongoing recruitment of young people into sodomy as funded by European and American organisations which bribe young people into sodomy with offers of money, ipod and laptops under the guise of “sexual and reproductive” rights seminars.

That's some academic source Ssempa is citing…

Pastor Ssempa and those that support him keep claiming that the “Kill the Gays” Bill focuses “NOT on people, but rather acts.”  Yet those “acts” are narrowly defined and advertised as “secret deviant” things that only gays (and gay men at that) do.

These are more excuses to try and wash over the fact they want to target gays to be killed out of sheer animus and homophobic bigotry.  As much as these people try the smoke and mirrors approach, it is vital that we continue to shine a light on what this bill and its supporters really intend.

You can dress it up in gross-out porn presentations or throw Bible verses on it with support from American Evangelicals, but the results are the same: mass genocide for gays in Uganda.
