Zionism in Academia

Joel Kovel, a long-time professor at Bard College and the author of Overcoming Zionism was recently terminated from his post as a part-time professor after 21 years of teaching. Kovel says that the University and its president, Leon Botstein, have fired him because of his views on Zionism and his outspoken criticism of the state of Israel. Bard has denied the accusation and says that Kovel was not fired but relieved for financial reasons. According to a letter Botstein sent to Kovel, the college is eliminating a number of part-time positions. Botstein, in his letter, noted that, "I am delighted that you hold views that many consider wrong or dangerous. You are not as controversial as you would like to believe." You can read Kovel’s statement and letter to faculty here.
